Dog Will Only Poop in the House

Question: My puppy seems to be peeing outside O.K. But she seems to only poop in the house.  Why is that and how can I stop it? - from Miranda

Answer:  You did not mention how old your puppy is, but please remember that puppies under 4 months old have very little bladder or sphincter control.

Here are a couple of tips for getting your puppy to poop outside:

  1. Puppies will usually poop after eating, a full stomach trigger the response to poop.
  2. Letting your puppy out in the backyard is not the same as taking him for a walk.  I recommend feeding the puppy, and letting him outside to pee.  Then hook on the leash and go for a quick 10 minute walk.  The exercise will typically trigger a bowel movement within the first 5 minutes, especially if he has a full stomach from eating.

The added benefit is that you will also get some exercise for yourself!
