Are they digging at night when the family is sleeping? If so, I would recommend keeping them in the house in either a kennel or a pen. I think most dogs get anxious when left alone so they acquire bad behaviors such as digging. I only have one dog so your situation is different, but I keep my dog in a kennel in the same room I sleep in. He will sleep for hours and hours as long as he knows I\’m there too. Hope I helped :)

There is an excellent book on German Shephard’s by the Monks of New Skete called How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend. We have a rescue Shepherd at the beginning we had him sleep in the kitchen. However once we allowed him into our bedroom; 110 lbs. to sleep at night he became a different dog. He sleeps on a quilt and is so happy to get in there he has never moved off it; he thinks we might not notice him! Also Shephard’s need much stimulation and to be included with you, their family whenever possible, to meet their needs. Probably their natural instinct is telling them to go and look for other dogs as they are pack animals after all but they would prefer to have you. If this can’t work try crating them- put a mat or blanket, one of your old, worn tshirts in there and a favorite toy. It has to be indoors as well, your dogs will get to feel safe and secure in them and will be so much better off, emotionally and physically than left outdoors. You will need big crates as they have to be able to standup in them and turn. Good Luck.
