How Do I Stop My Dog From Jumping Up On People?

Question: Brandy, age 4 months, large breed, smart and learns commands easy.  Having a hard time teaching her to stop jumping up on people.  Do you have any tips? - from Renate

Answer:  It is fairly simple to stop your dog from jumping up on people if you are consistent.  It is good to realize that the puppy is only wanting to get close to you and establish eye contact - it wants your attention.

The first command I recommend to teach your dog is the “sit” command.  This will make correcting all bad behaviors much easier in the future.  While you are teaching the “sit” command - here are some tactics to stop the jumping problem.

  1. Step very lightly on your dogs hind toes.  Not enough to hurt, but just enough to get them to notice - this can be tricky, so be careful.
  2. As the dog jumps up, raise your knee into its chest.  The affectively pushes the dog backwards, and throws it off balance.  I have found this to be the most affective technique to stop jumping.
  3. Grasp its front paws and push it backwards, throwing it off balance.

Always say “NO!” when you do one of these.  Once the dog is on all four paws, ignore it for a couple of minutes and then call it over give the “SIT” command and praise it with words and petting.

Most importantly, be consistent, and have all family members be consistent.  You have to NEVER allow the dog to jump on you and not correct it.

I have a 4 month old rottie puppy and she is almost house broken but has a mistake here and there. when should we stop using the puppy pads? we are gone most of the day and she still goes on the paper. She has made it through the night without going so her bladder is getting stronger. Just not sure when to get he off the pads.
