How Do I Stop My Puppy From Peeing in His Kennel?
Question: Hi! I rescued a 2-3 month old puppy about 3 weeks ago and I am trying to crate train him. So far I have gotten him to stop pooping in the cage, but even with frequent trips outside, he still pees in it! I feel like I am giving him a bath 5 times a day! Is there anything I can do to get him to stop peeing in his kennel? - from Apryl

Most of the facilities I have visited typically keep the dogs in kennels, that are big enough to allow the dog to eliminate directly in the kennel. On top of that, you really have no idea how the puppy was treated before you adopted it.
The first thing I would recommend is to make sure that the kennel is extremely small. The dog should just have enough room to stand up and turn around. Also do not put any paper or blankets in the kennel. Many times if he is forced to lay in his own pee, it will only happen once. Dogs are very clean by nature.
The other thing to remember is that puppies under the age of 4 months have little bladder control. It is not uncommon for a puppy to be well over 6 to 8 months old before he is reliably house trained.
