My 14 Month Old Puppy is Still Not Potty Trained

Question: My dog is 14 months old.  I know I didn’t train him properly but is still not potty trained. Do you have sugestions? - from Frank

Answer: Well Frank, it sounds like it is time to get serious.  At 14 months of age your puppy is more than capable of being reliably housebroken.  In fact I really think we owe it to our dogs to train them to be responsible members of our families.

Here is the “down and dirty” things to get started on today:

  1. Properly crate train your dog.  This way he is controlled when you are unable to watch him 100% of the time.  When he is loose in the house you must be able to watch him closely to stop the accidents.
  2. When you catch him in the act, you must immediately say “NO!” and get him outside.  When he finishes his duty, give plenty of praise.
  3. You have to be firm and consistent, especially at the age that your dog is today.
