How do I get my Puppies to Stop Chewing on the Furniture?

Question: How can I get my puppies (ages 9 months and 6 months) to stop chewing on things they should not, such as furniture. - from Karyn

Answer: I am not surprised that your puppies are chewing - after all that is what puppies do!  Now, lets talk about channeling that chewing energy in another direction…

The first thing I would do is be sure there are plenty of chew toys - that they actually like to chew on.  A toy should always be in sight, so when they feel like chewing that is what they go for.

When you catch your puppies in the act, you need to immediately administer a firm “NO!” - and show the appropriate body language - dogs are smart and can read your body language just like humans.  Then pick them up and remove them - just like “time out” that we do with children.  If they have kennels, use this.

After a couple of minutes, remove them and give them the appropriate chew toy - then praise them when they take it.

Be consistent!  Dogs like to make us happy, so you just have to show them often enough what makes you happy - they will eventually catch on.
