Cleaning Stains Around Dogs Eyes

Question: I have a white pomapoo its eyes seem to be running all the time i’ve been told this is normal.  Since the coat is white, there are stains on the eyes all the time, and the dog looks sickly, but it is not.  Any tips? - from Ivy

Answer: I would recommend a quick trip to the vet, if you have not done so already, just to rule out any infections or conditions with the eyes.  However, you are correct, this is typically a normal issue - and is simply more noticeable with a white coat.

The first treatment is simply clean the fur on the eyes everyday.  You can do this simply with water or a special shampoo from the pet store.  If you don’t want stained fur, you will simply need to be dedicated to daily cleanings.

Some people recommend only allowing your dog to drink distilled water - this way there is no iron in the water.  Once exposed to air, the water in the eye will turn brownish red because of the iron consumed in the water.

Remember if there is nothing medically wrong, there is nothing seriously wrong with having the brown stains - it is simply cosmetic.
